Roter Tessinermais

Grown between the wars in an Italian-language canton in southern Switzerland, this variety bears two medium-sized ears on each sturdy 7 foot stalk. We had some savage storms which bedded other corn this season, but this planting stood undamaged. It makes a colorful cornmeal with excellent, nutty flavor. Quite rare, but seems well adapted to our elevation and climate. There were a few scattered golden ears in the plot, but almost all were the glistening red. If you are saving the seed, you will want to rouge the gold type. The seed I have originally came from Soltice Seed, who recommended this practice.
